Historical Society
This month:
·      Bids in process for tin for interior ceiling of Welna building – will use new tin
o   Should have adequate funds for project
In process:
·      Welna restoration (next phase of restoration is choice of floor, interior, heat & a/c or plumbing):
o   Work on ceiling and roof insulation first priority
o   Planning to donate/discard all the clocks in storage there
Completed:
·      Had float in parade
·      T shirts fund raisers sold out
·      Boxcar mural at trailhead is completed and paid for

o   Buried brick enclosure with arched ceiling and chimney hole

This month:
·      12 current members: 7-8 planting (others have health issues)
·      Planning a fall display for gardens

·      Expanding sprinkler system, installation scheduled for week of 8/20, bid is for $1500

·      Held fund raiser dinner during Holdingford Daze
o   Raised approximately $3300
o   City has committed $1000 in annual budgets to Garden Club
·      Spring cleaning done
·      Pond opened and fish placed
·      Selling perennial bulbs at Blooming Shack as a fundraiser

Economic Development
This month:
·      70th anniversary of WWII soldier shrine to be held around Labor Day
·      Discussion of walk/bike tour of local historical points in town
·      TK restaurant completing required paperwork for reopening
·      Joe attended Blandin Foundation presentation on broadband
o   Seeking 10 rural communities (define our community as Helping Hands service area?)
o   Average grant $75,000 for infrastructure to lay fiber one optic cable
o   Uses include web sites for local/home businesses, fire fighter training, classroom, communications for elderly and disabled
o   Expansion of broadband through cell phones may improve services
o   Does require homeowner to pay monthly fee for service, free wi-fi for hot spots(?)
o   Potential partners are cable/internet providers
o   Initial grant deadline due 10/15/2012

·      Joe watering recent tree plantings along trail
·      Planning Commission: meeting the first Wednesday of each month
o   Hoping to channel ideas into a working plan, develop to keep current business and recruit new
o   Searching for consultants to lead
o   Review local buildings; how to increase foot traffic; reduce vacancies; catering to different business types (employers versus retail shops)
·      New owner of restaurant (Sjurseth) reopening in August, has some restaurant experience, plans to bring in experienced staff
·      Lake Wobegone cafĂ© is remodeling and may reopen
·      Planning to purchase signage recognizing Initiative Foundation projects
·      Advertisement of trail in magazines
·      Bike Trail
o   QR code to be posted at trail head is in process
·      Head of LWTA (Cliff Bergerding?) requested $200 donation from Commercial Club
o   Phones or wireless PC can read code to open LWTrails.com website
o   Wi-fi hot spot at liquor store, can one be set up at trail head?
o   LWTA will ask cities for $200 contribution to assist in set up
o   LakeWobegonTrails.com has virtual tour of bike trail
o   Bridge to bridge ride could employ QR codes/four square technology
·      Campground: cement pads installed for patio area, electric available at all sites
o   Plan for bathroom upgrades estimated at $80,000
o   Lions Club looking into legacy grant for showers
o   Lake Wobegon Trail Association wants to include information in trail literature, may be willing to assist with grants for bathroom upgrades
o   Need post and collection box for campsites
o   New cement fire rings on order for campground at each parking spot and one in tent area
·      Wood pile to be stocked by volunteers as fund raiser for Historical Society
o   Electric at parking spots on end of line, insufficient power at campsites (Xcel issue)
·      Bike trail
o   Melrose, Freeport setting up yellow bike program
·      A couple of bikes missing from Melrose
o   Jordy’s Cafe setting up bike rental in Bowlus

·      Discussed unusual contests at other small town celebrations including; corn eating, sander races (on a track), husband calling
·      Promotion of Holiday Home tour first weekend in December
o   Commitment from Ron Schmitt (large taxidermy collection)
·      “Caramel Apple” new ride on trail this fall, starting in Melrose and heading westward

Art Project
This month:
·      Plaques and bench to be installed on sculpture prior to dedication on 8/26
·      Informed Judy (mill owner), Hometown News, Enterprise, dedication info to be published in church bulletin, will send info to St Cloud Times

·      Legion post is favorable to a mural on wall by bank parking lot
·       Sculpture project has garnered much positive feedback
o   Keith painted building to improve backdrop of sculpture
o   City council considering approval of cement/gravel lane leading to trail and sculpture
o   Dedication of sculpture to be held at 11:30 before picnic
o   Keith have a booth at picnic regarding construction of sculpture
o   Various giveaways to first 25 attendees at sculpture dedication
·      Central MN Arts Board has approved 2nd grant worth a total of $10,531.00
·      Holdingford Mill Art Project
o   Fence sculpture installed, bench to be added soon
o   Initial $5,000 up front fee has been paid to Keith Raivo
o   Polar supplied most of the materials needed for the project
